Masters Water Polo

Our adult co-ed team brings together players from across Southern Maine for recreational water polo, skills practice, and competition with other New England teams.

Experienced and returning players are welcome, as are confident swimmers learning the sport. Practices include drills, shooting, and a scrimmage.

Check Calendar for current practice dates and locations, Gallery for team photos, and Resources for instructional videos. Joining information is below.

Am I Good Enough to Play?

Many of our players have experience from high school or college and others have joined with only swimming experience. Don’t be worried if you don’t pick the sport up quickly—it takes time!

Newcomers: Preparing to Play

Water polo is a great workout. Preparing your fitness will help you enjoy practice and focus on learning the game.

These activities can help you prepare:

Comfortably swim 500 yards (20 lengths of a 25-yard pool).
Tread water with an eggbeater kick for three 20-second intervals with your arms above your head, taking short breaks.
Tread water normally for longer periods.
Swim heads-up freestyle comfortably.

Visit Resources for instructional videos on eggbeater technique and water polo rules.

Typical Practice

A typical club practice involves:

Warmup exercises,
Fitness / sprinting oriented drills
Practice passing
Practice shooting
Common water polo scenario drills (driving, 6 on 5, etc.)
A full 5v5 or 6v6 scrimmage depending on turnout
